OPRAH'S EARLY LIFE

Oprah growing up was very poor.

• Oprah Gail Winfrey  was born January 29, 1954  to an unmarried teenage parents.

• Her mother, Vernita Lee, was a housemaid and her biological father was Vernon Winfrey was a coal miner turned barber turned city councilman who was in the Armed Forces

when she was born. • Decades later, Mississippi farmer and World

War II veteran Noah Robinson Sr. claimed to be her biological father.

• After her birth, Winfrey's mother traveled north.

She then lived with her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee.

Hattie Mae Lee was so poor that Oprah often wore dresses made of potato sacks, for which

the local children made fun of her.

But that did not keep Oprah down.

She kept on praying and being good.

If Oprah misbehaved, her grandma would use a whip to beat

her.

At age six, Winfrey moved to an inner-city neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her mother. Her mother was less supportive/less encouraging than her grandmother had been. This is due in large part to the long hours Vernita Lee worked as a maid.

Winfrey has stated that she was molested by her cousin, her uncle, and a family friend,

starting when she was nine years old.

At age 13, after suffering years of abuse, Winfrey ran away from home. When she was 14, she became pregnant, but her son died

shortly after birth.

At the age of 14 her mom was very frustrated so she sent Oprah to go live with her dad in Nashville, Tennessee.
