Responsive Classroom

What is it?

• Is a way of teaching that emphasizes social, emotional and academic growth in a strong and safe school community.

Principles that guide this approach

• The social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum.

• How children learn is as important as what they learn: Process and content go hand in hand.

• The greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interaction.

Principles that guide this approach

• To be successful academically and socially, children need a set of social skills: cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control.

• Knowing the children we teach—individually, culturally, and developmentally—is as important as knowing the content we teach.

Principles that guide this approach

• Knowing the families of the children we teach and working with them as partners is essential to children’s education.

• How the adults at school work together is as important as their individual competence: Lasting change begins with the adult community.

Classroom practices

• Morning Meeting

• Rule Creation

• Interactive Modeling

• Positive teacher language

• Logical consequences

• Classroom organization

• Working with families

• Collaborative problem solving

Math

ObjectivesOTo help children master mathematical concepts and skills.

OTo help children construct mathematical knowledge and problem solving skills

What will your child learn?ONumbers to 1,000

OAddition and subtraction up to 1,000

OMultiplication Tables: 0, 1,O 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10OMetric Measurements: length, mass, and volume

What will your child learn?

OTimeOMoneyOGeometry: shapes, lines, and surfaces

Problem Solving

OPrimary goalOCentral to mathematical learning

Through Problem Solving

Students are encouraged OTo consider how they think,

OHow they communicate,OHow they solve problems so they can apply their skills to subsequent problems

Model Drawing and Problem Solving

O Help students visualize abstract math relationships

O Use rectangular blocks because they are easily divided

O Can be used before students know algebraic solutions

Example

Ahmad bought 20 chicken

eggs and duck eggs. There were 7 duck eggs. How

many chicken eggs were

there?

7 ?

20

20−7=13

There were 13 chicken eggs

20

What is it?

Balanced LiteracyA comprehensive, differentiated approach to reading and writing instruction.

A framework designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively, releasing responsibility

Program has 3 components

READING, WRITING & WORD STUDY

Reading• Interactive Read Aloud

• Shared Reading

• Guided Reading

•Independent Reading

Writing• Modeled Writing•Shared Writing• Interactive Writing • Guided Writing• Independent Writing

Language/Word Study

Handwriting Spelling Instruction

Phonics Instruction Vocabulary Instruction

Teacher reads selections aloud to students

Teacher & students read text together

Teacher works with small, flexible groups of children who have similar reading strengths

& needs.

Students read appropriate self-selected books independently

Students need to read books that are JUST RIGHT for them!

Teacher & students collaborate to write text; teacher acts as a

guide

Teacher & students compose text together sharing the pen.

Teacher works with a group of students with similar strengths

& needs

Students write independently

Components of Language/Word Study

Phonics Instructions Vocabulary Instruction Spelling Instruction Handwriting

Spelling Our spelling program differs from a traditional spelling program where kids receive a list of words on Monday and are tested on those words on Friday. Rather, our focus will be on word study. We will study sound and word patterns. Grades will be taken from writing samples and cloze activities rather than a weekly test.

What parents can do at home!READ ALOUD to your child every single

day!Have access to books at home.Make visit to a local library with your

child.Encourage your child to read and write at

home.Help your child choose “just right books”.
