A PROPOSAL ON

WRITING A NOVEL ABOUT

THE PHILIPPINES

Lazaro

• During the course of Rizal’s stay in several European

cities, he cited that Filipinos were practically an unknown

nation (Guerrero, 1998).

• Thus, during Paris Exposition of 1889, Rizal encouraged

his fellow expatriates to call themselves Indios Bravos.

Indios Bravos

The Exposition Universelle de 1889 was a highly

successful international exhibition and one of the few

world's fairs to make a profit.

• Rizal presented a proposal on writing a novel about the

Philippines to the Circulo-Hispano Filipino on 21 March

1887.

• One year after, Pedro Paterno’s Ninay was published with

its subtitle Costumbres Filipinas (Philippine Customs).

• Ninay is considered as the first Philippine novel

published in 1908. It portrayed the richness of the

Philippine environment and culture through intertwined

narratives and descriptions of the countries sights and

rituals.
