The Human Brain & Thinking

100,000,000,000 neurons!

Stimulus from the outside world

Changed into an electrochemical signal by the sensory neuron affected

Signal travels through peripheral nervous system (PNS)

Signal reaches the central nervous system (CNS) – protected by the spine

Signal travels up the CNS and into the brain

Signal reaches the brain, where it will be processed

Signal travels via interneurons through the brain to reach the specific neurons that will process and respond

Signal reaches the cell body of the relevant neuron

Signal travels down the axon to the synaptic gap

The signal will need to jump across the gap between the two synapses

Signal triggers a chemical reaction in the presynaptic terminal

Chemical signal travels across synaptic gap

Chemical signal is received and travels along dendrite to the next neuron’s cell body

Processed information triggers an electrochemical reaction. It will travel the reverse route from CNS to motor neurons in the PNS which will activate the body’s response
