Looking at Fractions in Pie Charts

Before we look at the different types of notes and rhythms, we take a quick look at some fractions

The whole pie represents the number 1

If we cut the pie down the middle (and give the rest away) we have half the pie left. This is the fraction

1/2

Now if we cut (divide) the rest of the pie into half again, what's left is the

fraction one quarter (1/4)

Cut the quarter piece in half again, and you are left with one eighth

(1/8)

Here is a whole pie with eight equal slices. Each slice is one eighth of

the whole (1/8)

This pie has three equal segments (1/3rds)
