THE RED PLANETPRESENTED BY,SOWMYA SOUNDARAKSHAY

• Mars is the fourth planet from the sun• Second-smallest planet in the Solar System after Mercury

• Romans named it after their god of war – Mars (Ares - Greek)• His festivals were held in March, the month named for him

HOW MARS GOT ITS NAME

• Mars was named by the  Romans for their god of war because of its red, bloodlike color.

• Egyptians named it "Her Desher“, meaning "the red one.“

• Ancient Chinese astronomers dubbed it "the fire star.“

• The iron oxide  prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance.

OLYMPUS MONS

• The largest volcano and highest known mountain in any planet

• 21.9 Km

MOONS OF MARS

Phobos & Deimos

MOONS OF MARS

• Discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall• Origin is possibly asteroid capture.• Named after Greek mythology characters Panic and Dread

WATER IN MARS• Liquid water cannot exist on the surface of Mars due to low

atmospheric pressure 6/1000th

• Signs of water once existing in the planet

• Two polar ice caps• If melted, would be sufficient to cover the

entire planetary surface to a depth of 11 meters

ORBIT OF MARS

• Mars is 230 million km away from the sun.• Mars’ solar day (sol) = 24 hours and 39 minutes  • Mars revolution = 687 earth days

ATMOSPHERE

• Consists of 95% carbon dioxide, 2% nitrogen, 2% argon and traces of oxygen and water

• Extremely thin atmosphere

• Mass:6.42 x 10^23 kg (10.7% Earth)

INTERIOR

• Core – consists of iron + sulphur, partially fluid

• Mantle – silicate• Crust – 50-125 km thick

• Surface Temperature: -140 to 30 °C
