What is Engineering?What is Engineering?

Where engineering Where engineering can take us?can take us?

Where can we go?

• Engineers made aeroplanes and cars that can take you to other towns, cities and countries.

• They also made rockets and spaceships so we can go into outer space. This is helpful for jobs that are not where you are. Engineers made all of our transport that we use today.

Where can we go in life?

• Engineering is a high paying job that has a lot of options within the job. You can have aerospace, agricultural, automotive, biological and bio stems, biomedical, building, electrical and many more!

• We think that in the future our engineering skills will improve and there will be hover cars and cars that can go to the moon. if engineers can do that then they could possibly make rocket boots.

Flood Alleviation - Elgin

The Scheme

The flood alleviation scheme started April 2011 and is costing £86 million. It is Scotland’s biggest ever flood scheme to date. The scheme is still ongoing because on the 11th of August 2014 it protected approximately 270 residential and 75 business premises from flooding, avoiding damages of an estimated £29 million.

Damage before the scheme!

Why are there no Why are there no female engineers? female engineers?

Women classed as a joke?

Women are now welcome in engineering more that ever but…..

-We are still considered a lower ability to men

-Less encouraged

-Not a lot of female role-models

Statistics

The ratio of men to women in engineering is hard to imagine by just statistics/ Percentages and numbers. These charts show vast majority are most defiantly men.

Statistics Only 6% of the engineering workforce in the UK is female

Nearly half (46%) of all co-ed secondary state schools sent no girls on to do physics at  A level in 2011 . Why are girls so put of stereotypical men based subjects? Is it the pressure, the feeling of being in-superior?

Yet women are winning in the success rates despite are minority …Women have earned 57% of all bachelor’s degrees and about half of all science andengineering (S&E) bachelor’s degrees since the late 1990s

Only 5.5% of engineering professionals are female and only 27%  of engineering and science technicians are female

Why are there no female engineers?

This got us thinking made us question ourselves and did some research …..

seen, seen, or heardor heardIn fact... Women over the years have not received credit for their work because until 30 years ago it was frowned upon to even see a female engineer.

Women never got credit for their work not only in engineering but in all men dominated careers including:

Ada LovelaceAda Lovelace•Ada Lovelace was often referred to as the worlds first computer programmer.

•Ada Lovelace was the daughter of the great English poet Lord Byron.

•Ada Lovelace was known as ‘The enchantress of Numbers.’

•Ada Lovelace was one of the first minds to speculate about artificial intelligence.

•Ada’s notes revealed that she foresaw the potential for computer-generated music.

•Ada’s mother taught her math and science at a very young age.

•Ada had a widely known fascination with magical beliefs.

•During her twenties, Ada developed a serious gambling problem.

•Ada’s life ended at the young age of 36.

Rosalind FranklinRosalind FranklinRosalind Franklin was born in London, England on 25th July 1920. When she was 15, she decided to become a scientist.

After graduation in 1941, she was awarded a research scholarship to work on gas chromatography, but left in 1942 to work at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, where she worked on the microstructure of coke.

As a result of her research, she gained her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Cambridge in 1945.

Lise MeitnerLise Meitner

•Lise Meitner was born on the 7th of November 1878 in Vienna Austria.

•She is from a Jewish family.

•She entered the university of Vienna in 1901 studying physics.

Martha CostonMartha Coston,,

Martha was left widowed and with 3 children had to find a way to support herself and children.

One of the ideas was a pyrotechnic (signal) flare.

Her children would have been her inspiration to push her into making the flare so she could support them.

Martha sold the rights to her flare to the U.S. Navy then paid her $20,000 for it.

“Let me tell you about my trouble with girls … three things happen when they are in the lab … You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticise them, they cry”

June 2015

Why are we interested in Engineering?

We are interested in engineering because:

• We would like to do engineering in the future.

• We can prove to everyone that girls can be engineers too.
