introduc>on  to  wrd  530:  digital  storytelling

digital  story:  a  short,  personal  story  in  digital  format.  The  story  blends  voice  with  personal  images  and  music,  and  it  is  typically  composed  with  inexpensive  hardware  and  soFware.  It  is  o;en  produced  in  a  workshop  environment.

i.  history  &  evolution  of  the  form

beginnings:  as  art

1990:  Dana  Atchley’s  “Next  Exit” 1993:  Atchley  &  Joe  Lambert’s  American  Film  Ins>tute  Workshop

1994:  Lambert  opens  the  SFDMC,  which  in  1998  moves  to  Berkeley,  CA  and  becomes  the  Center  for  Digital  Storytelling  (CDS).  Thus  is  born  the  “Californian”  model  of  digital  storytelling.
