MSME Sector in India
• Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector has emerged as a highly vibrant and dynamic sector of the Indian economy over the last five decades. MSMEs not only play crucial role in providing large employment opportunities at comparatively lower capital cost than large industries but also help in industrialization of rural & backward areas, thereby, reducing regional imbalances, assuring more equitable distribution of national income and wealth.
• MSMEs are complementary to large industries as ancillary units and this sector contributes enormously to the socio-economic development of the country.

Current scenario on the “OHS” front
• Every 15 seconds, a worker dies from a work-related accident or disease.
• Every 15 seconds, 160 workers have a work-related accident.
• The human cost of this daily adversity is vast and the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product each year.
• Accident Fatality Rate in India: : 110 per million Employees per year.

The way out• Management must give its due attention and focus to OHS
management.
• Management of OHS needs to be integrated with overall management system of the organization.
• Basic PDCA principle may be adopted to install a an effective OHS management system. An out line is provided in the next slide.
• Formal certification to any of the OHS management system may not be immediately necessary but can be treated as a long term goal.

• Business Planning process must include its share of OHS concerns.The safety should be addressed right from the design level. Veryoften the problem is our inability to anticipate issues at the beginningrather than availability of sufficient resources.
• Adoption of OHS management system is no longer an option it is animperative.
