  MybiglearningeventforthiscoursewasthesenseofconnectednessI’vefeltinthisgroup,goingthroughthematerial.It’sanexperienceI’vefelthasbeenabsentfrommyon‐linepostingformatclassesintheAdministratorsLicenseprogram.They’reallgoodclasses,butmybighookintoeducationisthesocialaspect.SecondLifebringsthatinawaythat’smademefeelmoreconnectedtothiscoursethananyotherI’vetakenon‐line.There’sanimmediacyandalmosttactilequalitytoexperiencesgeneratedinSLthatanentirelytext‐drivencoursewillfundamentallybeunabletoprovide.

  There’sacertainharmonytoawell‐designedislandinSecondLife–abalancebetweeninfinitecomplexityandcleanlines.Eachofthesiteswevisitedseemedtoreflectacombinationofwide‐openspacesandthenrichlyconvolutednestsofideas,eachtakingaphysicalformforinteraction…ThisiswhatSecondLifeseemstobe.IseeSLasachanceforstudentstomakedeeperconnectionsbetweencontentandthemselves.Andifchallengedtobuildsomethingrepresentingtheirlearning,studentswouldbeexcitedtohaveatit.

  …IletstudentsknowIwouldbetherewatchingandreadytoassistwithanyquestions.BeforewelefttheSkydeckwewentoverhow‘basicslike’tosendaprivateInstantMessage[IM]andhowtoaskforateleportiftheygotstucksomewhere.Iwentwiththemandaftermakingsuretheyallmadeittothewelcomeareaandwereclickingtogetnotecards,Isentthemontheirowntoexploreandhoveredabovethebuild.UsingcameracontrolsIwasabletokeeptrackfairlywell(feltabitlikeamotherhentryingtokeeptrackofherchicks).IftheyranintoproblemsIcouldquicklybetheretohelp.ThisworkedverywellandsomestudentsdidInstantMessagemeforhelp,oreventosharetheirexcitementaboutwhattheywereexperiencing.
