ICT – a force for SOCIAL REFORM

ICT – a force for SOCIAL REFORM

On January 17, 2001, during the impeachment trialof Philippine President Joseph Estrada, loyalists inthe Philippine Congress voted to set aside keyevidence against him. Less than two hours after thedecision was announced, thousands of Filipinos, angry that their corrupt president might be let offthe hook, converged on Epifanio de los SantosAvenue, a major crossroads in Manila. The protestwas arranged, in part, by forwarded text messagesreading, "Go 2 EDSA. Wear blk." The crowd quicklyswelled, and in the next few days, over a millionpeople arrived, choking traffic in downtown Manila.

ICT – a force for SOCIAL REFORM

The public's ability to coordinate such a massive and rapid response --close to seven million text messages were sentthat week -- so alarmed the country's legislators that they reversed course and allowed the evidence to be presented.

ICT – a force for SOCIAL REFORMTHE THREE FACES OF SOCIAL MEDIA

1. The Good – used for communication where distance no longer matter.

2. The Bad – allowed people to hide behind screens and avatars and it has taken over our lives rather than us being in control.

3. The Ugly – it has become a common cause to broken relationships, self-centeredness and egocentricity. It is also for frauds and child abuse.
