They are the values and beliefs of

the country.

1. Separation of PowersGovernment is divided into 3 branches

• Executive (headed by President)

carries out the laws

• Legislative (Congress) makes the

laws

• Judicial (courts) explains and

interprets the laws

2. Checks & Balances• Each branch of government limits

the power of the other branches.

• No one branch is more powerful

• Judicial overturns

• Legislative overrides

3. Popular Sovereignty

• Government gets its

authority from the people

= Social Contract

• People have the right to

change or abolish their

government

4. Republicanism • Government run by the people

through elected representatives
