Today’s Learning Objectives

Understand the significance of Human Computer Interaction (HCI)

Discuss and argue about why Human computer Interaction (HCI) is important

Understanding Basic Concepts of HCIDescribe a formal definition of HCI

Human Computer Interaction?

• In daily life, we use/interact with various devices/machines/systems to fulfill a task or an objective:

• For examples:– Computers–Mobile Phones– Cars– Vending Machines (ATM etc )–Many more…..

Human Computer Interaction?

• There is a huge diversity in

– Devices/Machines– Types of Users–Nature of Tasks/Objectives– And, Ways of Interacting

Human Computer Interaction?Basic Scenario

HumanComputer

Interaction

Human Computer Interaction?

• It is a field of study that deals with:–Humans (Users)– Computers (Technology)– Interaction (Any Communication)

HCI- Objective

• The objective of HCI is to :

“design interactive Products/Systems to support people in their everyday

and working lives”.

HCI - Human• Human?? Or User• The user is whoever is trying to get

the job done using the technology– An individual User– Group of Users working together– Sequence of users in an organization,

each dealing with some part of the task or process.

– A range of users???

HCI - Human

HCI - Computer• Computer??

• any technology ranging from the general desktop computer to a large-scale computer system, a process control system or an embedded system.

• Any other?

HCI- Computers

HCI - Interaction• Interaction?? Any communication

between a user and computer• Direct interaction involves a dialog with

feedback and control throughout performance of the task

• Indirect interaction may involve batch processing or intelligent sensors controlling the environment.

HCI – Formal Definition

“Human-Computer Interaction is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them” (ACM/IEEE)

HCI – A Successful Product• useful – accomplish what is

required: play music, cook dinner, format a document;

• usable – do it easily and naturally, without danger of error, etc.;

• used – make people want to use it, be attractive, engaging, fun, etc.

HCI – A Successful Product

What we have learned today?

• What is HCI?• Why we need it? Importance?• Basics and Formal definition of

HCI
