PARTS OF AN ESSAY

INTRODUCTION

•The introduction opens the essay.

•It tells us what the essay is about.

•It consists of one paragraph (5 sentences or more)

•It contains the thesis statement or key sentence

THESIS STATEMENT

•The thesis statement is included inside the introduction.

•The sentence that grabs the attention of the reader.

•It can be in form of a question.

MAIN BODY• Deals with the major ideas that support the thesis

statement.• It consists of three paragraphs• Each paragraph must have a separate idea

▫1st paragraph – one idea and three supporting details▫2nd paragraph – one idea and three supporting details▫3rd paragraph – one idea and three supporting details

• Each paragraph must have explanations and if necessary examples.

• Each paragraph must have 5 sentences or more.

CONCLUSION

•The end of the essay.

•It must be a paragraph. (5 sentences or more)

•It is like a summary of what the essay is about.

•Maybe an observation or discussion or a solution about what you wrote on the body.

ClASS WORK

•Think about a topic that you would like to write about. (2 or 3 ideas)

•In a paper:•Write one small introduction.

At least 3 sentences.•Write one sentence for each body

paragraph. At least 3 sentences.

•Write one small conclusion. At least 3 sentences.
