IMPACT FACTOR (IF)

Calculation for five-year impact factor:

One year of citations to five years of articles.

A= citations in 2013 to articles published in 2008-2012 [= 400]

B= articles published in 2008-2012 [= 200]

C= A/B = five-year impact factor [= 400/200 = 2]

** Nature (IF = 51)** Science (IF = 48)

Journal RankingJournal Ranking

Quartile Rankings

I.Q1 denotes the top 25% of the IF distributionII.Q2 for middle-high position (between top 50% and top 25%)III.Q3 middle-low position (top 75% to top 50%), and IV.Q4 the lowest position (bottom 25% of the IF distribution)

** This ranking is based on subject category!

** According to the newly released 2013 Journal Citation Reports® Science Edition (Thomson Reuters, 2014), the new 5-Year Impact Factor for Remote Sensing is 2.729. Now it ranks 6/27 (Q1) in the category ‘Remote Sensing’.

*** Does it frustrate you? IF of a journal can widely-vary based on different subject categories!

Researcher RankingResearcher Ranking

Some TipsSome Tips

If you fail to publish in an ISI journal; what’s next:

•National well recognized journals (e.g. IEB, BIP, IAB)•Conference proceedings and presentations•Workshops and Research reports•Internationally Recognized Organizations/ Agencies (e.g. BRAC, NASA, USAID, ISPRS etc)

* Bangladesh related ISI journals (e.g. BANGLADESH JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH); 45 years on publishing journals!

** Try to find well-recognized publishers = Springer, Elsevier, Wiley etc.

** Remember: All Springer Journals are not ISI recognized

What is a Research Proposal?What is a Research Proposal?

A research proposal is a document of usually three to seven pages that informs others of a proposed piece of research.

The purpose of the proposal is to help you to focus and define your research plans.

Client’s Satisfaction!Client’s Satisfaction!

Client = Supervisor or Funding Agency

Every proposal scans for clear answers to three questions:

a)What are we going to learn that we do not know now?

b)Why it is worth knowing?

c)How will we know that the conclusions are valid?

** Follow the Research Interests or Instructions (ToR)!
