Reflection
This reflection has been written with the intention of not only providing the
important features of the text “The English Language” but also the features of the
summary that I wrote about that text.
In “The English Language” textis explained in a very detailed way the history of the
English language, its influences and development throughout the history; moreover, the
English language is also compared to other languages and also with different stages of its
own history such as old English compared to modern English. This Text is completely
useful for both, teachers and students, especially those students that are taking English
Culture and Lexical Analysis courses.
As a future English language teacher, I strongly believe that, not only is important
to know about phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, but also about
the historical context about the language, its influences, and changes through the history.
This information is the one that allows us to build a connection with it and to understand
in a better way the language that we are trying to learn and at the same time, the
language that we will teach.
In terms of the contribution of the text to the Lexical Analysis course is
fundamental, because of the quality of the contents that we can find in it, which will allow
us to achieve some of the specific objectives of the course, such as, characterize different
periods in the history of the English language, through comparisons between the different
stages as I mentioned before, in which ones the differences are clearly marked by specific
changesin the structure of the words and the use of the words.
In my personal opinion, the text is very interesting and useful; it allowed me to put
myself in a historical context of the English Language, to understand the meaningful
changes that it has experimented and the different influences that have made possible the
existence of such a beautiful and globalized language. I have the certainty that at the end
of this course, we, as futures teachers will be able to teach not only vocabulary and
expressions related to the language, but also, we will be able to teach the cultural context
of its development and how the language has become what it is today; moreover, this fact
also will improved the understanding and learning process of the students and, also there
is a big chance to improve their motivation, because of the quality of the contents that we
will delivering as teachers, since students will be learning the language from a concrete
base.
