JOHN MILTON MILTON was born on
1608 in Bread Street, Cheapside, LONDON. He faces various trouble in their life. His great work is PARADISE LOST, it was begun as early as 1658, and issued in 1667. At first it was divided into ten books or parts, but in the second edition it was redivided into twelve.
FEMINISTIC PERSPECTIVE.
In PARADISE LOST EVE was one of the most important character who was wife of ADAM.
In both BIBLE and PARADISE LOST, EVE is to blame from humankind’s exile.
WOMAN are not born submissive. SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR – ‘’THE
SECOND SEX’’.
Forces to ‘become WOMAN’. She shall be called WOMAN,
because she was taken out of MAN.
She made from MAN. MILTON repositions – EVE as a
complex woman. Milton described EVE, is also
ADAM’S EQUAL.
Illusion of equality, reality of equality.
ADAM’S ‘DOMINION’ over all living creatures, including EVE.
ADAM, exerting his position as a protector.
‘’Our reason is our low.’’ WHY SHE ATE THE APPLE? EVE’S folly in eating the apple is
both positive and negative.
POSITIVE – she asserts her agency in choosing to eat it. NEGATIVE – because of the repercussions.
In the BIBLE, EVE deceives ADAM into eating the apple, but in PARADISE LOST, ADAM chooses to eat it.
The results are the same, though’ ADAM blames EVE.
EVE took the blame because she had to, not because she wanted to.
