Making things
Before making an object in the workshop it is very important to know what pieces or parts it has:
1st - We will make those pieces one by one
2nd - We will assemble all the parts together, using:
Glue, nails, screws, …
Exploded viewsAn exploded view of an object is a drawing of every piece in the object
It is very important to indicate all the measurements of every piece, so we can make them later with the real materials.

Activity 1Draw all the pieces of the following wooden box using
the measurements in the picture
Important things when drawing the pieces:
Use the ruler to measure
Be careful with the right angles (90º). Use your set squares.
Put all the measurements in every piece.
Activity 2Draw all the pieces of the following object using
the measurements in the picture

Measurements are always in millimeters, even if the unit is not shown
The plywood used to make the piece 1 is 3 mm thick
All the bars in the handrail are 5x10 mm
Activity 3a) Draw all the pieces of the following object using the
measurements in the picture and the scale you need
Use scales when needed
If the size is too big, we can use units such as meters and kilometers
measurements in meters

Bars are 100x100 mm
b) Draw the three main views of the object (front, left side and top), using a 1:50 scale
Activity 4 (Homework)
Choose an object in your house and draw its exploded view
The object must have at least 4 different pieces. Remember to put the real measurements in
every piece Use scales if you need it
Some suggestions: table, desk, chair, drawer, cupboard, …
SURFACE DEVELOPMENTS
If the object is made of only one piece of material that is folded, it is more useful to: Draw the complete surface unfolded Use lines to show where to fold
Flaps are used to glue the different sides together
Very useful with objects made of paper, cardboard, sheets of plastic or metal, …
Activity 5
Draw the surface development of the following objects
a)Envelope for a CD(a CD has a 120 mm radius)
b) Sweets dispenser(maximum size: 170 mm high, 100 mm wideand 50 mm deep)
c) Your binder (homework)(use the real measurements with a 1:4 scale)
vocabulary (Homework)
Write a sentence explaining in your own words the meaning of the following concepts:
assemble, exploded view, surface development, wooden, plywood, bar, handrail, fold, unfold, flap, binder
