Companies/Institutions that Distribute Magazines

By Georgia Ascroft

EMAP

• Brands: Retail Week, Retail Jeweller

• I feel that this is not an appropriate distributor for my magazine as I feel that from my research I learned that they do not distribute any music magazines therefore I feel they will not have sufficient knowledge of the industry to promote a new music magazine.

• Website: http://www.emap.com/

EMAP

• Brands: Vogue, Glamour, Vanity fair, GQ• I like how modern the website is as I feel it

reflects the younger demographic that I am trying to achieve, however I feel that it is more targeted towards the fashion industry as opposed to music.

• Website: http://www.condenast.co.uk/

Conde Nast

IPC

• IPC Media is the UK’s leading consumer magazine and digital publisher

• Their brands: Look, Chat, Now, Nuts, Woman’s weekly and NME

• I do not think that that IPC Media should distribute my magazine due to the fact that from my research I realised that the magazines that they distributed are prominently from the lifestyle genre as opposed to music/rock with NME as an exception.

• Website:

IPC

Hearst Magazines (National Magazine Company)

• Brands: Harper’s Bazarre, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Company, Real People, Reveal

• I do not think that that Hearst Magazins should distribute my magazine due to the fact that from my research I realised that the magazines that they distributed are prominently from the lifestyle genre e.g. Cosmopolitan and Elle as opposed to music/rock

• Website: http://www.hearst.co.uk/

Hearst Magazines

Immediate Media

• Brands: Top of the Pops, Radio Times, BBC Gardener’s World

• As this group works with the BBC there could be no advertisement on different media platforms such as television as the BBC has no advertisements

Immediate Media

Bauer Media

• Brands: Q Magazine, Kerrang, Mojo, More• However as a multimedia conglomerate Bauer Media

Group could advertise Wonderland magazine for free on one of their TV channels that are specifically made for music such as 4music and Box Television. This will help increase awareness of a brand new magazine to an audience that already ahs an interest in music.

• Baeuer can use synergy to promote my magazine across various media platforms hence why I decided to have Bauer Media Group as the distributor for my magazine.

• Website: http://www.bauermedia.co.uk

Bauer Media

Wenner Media LLC

• Brands: Rolling Stone• However when I went online to do the

research on Wenner media the website below was found. In a growing market for online magazines I do not feel that this website reflects a modern, new magazine especially for the first result hence why I do not want them to distribute my magazine.

Wenner Media

How do magazines make dosh, readies, wonga?

ADVERTISINGThe higher the ad revenue the more money the magazine has made

Pricing: To try to increase sales music magazines usually offer a cheaper rate if the reader subscribes to their magazine which consequently makes their magazine more appealing and encourages repeat business.

Q Magazine and Kerrang

• Cover Price: £3.99• Circulation: 80,418

• Cover Price: £2.20• Circulation: 42,077• Ad revenues:

Rolling Stones and NME

• Cover Price: $4.99• Circulation: 1,464,943• Ad Revenue: 167.35 million U.S. dollars (2012)

• Cover Price: £2.20• Circulation: 23,924

Rolling Stone, NME, Kerrang

• The music magazine publishing industry is monopolised. With large companies e.g. Bauer owning the smaller less known companies.

• It is very important for magazines to use the right distributer for their magazine to maximise their profit for their publication.
