Digital literacies thinkpiece

DESCRIPTION

I developed these slides as part of CSU's 2013 Think Piece project. The idea behind the think pieces is to provide 'an opportunity for an ongoing, open dialogue about how some of the CSU community are thinking about the challenges and opportunities' (http://www.csu.edu.au/division/landt/dialogue-about-learning-and-teaching/think-pieces-2013). So this is my take on an area that we could be doing a lot more in at CSU.

Digital literacies

A thought-piece on the place of digital literacies in a busy curriculum

Carole HunterFaculty of Business, 2013

“As 90% of new jobs will require excellent digital skills, improving digital

literacy (by which we mean those capabilities essential for living,

learning and working in a digital society) is a key component for

developing effective and employable learners.”

“The issue for educators is twofold I would suggest: Firstly how can they best take advantage of abundance in their own teaching practice, and secondly how do we best equip learners to make

use of it? It is this second challenge that is perhaps the most significant.” Martin Weller (2011)

“Digital literacy is becoming central to what universities can offer.”

(Littlejohn, Beetham & McGill, 2012)

equipping students for learning in an

What does it mean to be

digitally literate in your

discipline?

Is this the answer?

“Young people may be adept at internet searching, using social networking and content download sites.... (but) much of young people’s use continues to be passive viewing of online content.” (Kirkman 2012)

Scaffolding digital pioneers?

“I don't think that digital literacies can be taught - at least not in formal settings. I believe they can only be learnt informally, mainly due to the fact that many of them are personal, relating directly to a particular student's presence, identity and activities online. That however, does not preclude teachers from supporting the acquisition of digital literacies.”
