Note

Sinking of the Lusitania

• A German submarine sunk the ship.

• 1198 passengers were killed, while 128 of them were Americans.

• President Wilson demanded the Germans to apologize and pay for damages.

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

• Sussex pledge– Germany promised not to sink merchant ships

without first warning them and rescuing passengers.

– By 1917 Germany is defeating Russia on the Eastern front, they want a quick victory on the western front. To do this they use unrestricted submarine warfare. They sank all ships heading towards allied nations.

Zimmerman’s Note

• Zimmerman was a German official he sent a letter to Mexico asking them to attack the USA. In exchange they would get their land back. (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona.)

Trench Warfare

Trenches in the Night

Problems in the TrenchesTrench Attacks

Reason for

Trenches

Problem in the TrenchesMany problems arose in the trenches.

•One think was the smell was completely awful

•Two it was really cold

•Three there were rats everywhere

•Four diseases began to spread

•Five maggots and lice were everywhere

•Six there were decaying bodies all over

Trench Attack

At Dawn and dusk were when most of the attacks came. They would hit them with artillery and then go over the top and charge them with many men.

Reason for TrenchesOne main reason they did this for was to cut back on the body counts.

Secondly they did this to protect there positions so it would be harder to take over for the enemy.

Night Time in the TrenchesAt night two things would happen one would be supplies were sent in to the remaining soldiers who would stay on the front line. Secondly they would replace some of the soldiers to give them a break from all of the action.
