Density

Density- the measure of how much mass is contained in a given unit of volume.

Abbrev. Ending Unit

Density D g/cm3

Mass m g

Volume V cm

Density Column-Think about it???

List the following in order of density (from the heaviest to the lightest).

Water, Dawn Dish Soap, Vegetable Oil, Rubbing Alcohol, Karo Syrup, Honey and Lamp Oil

Material Density

Rubbing Alcohol .79

Lamp Oil .80

Vegetable Oil .92

Water 1.00

Dawn Dish Soap 1.06

Light Corn Syrup 1.33

Honey 1.42

Density Column

What order of density for the following:

Water, Dawn Dish Soap, Vegetable Oil, Rubbing Alcohol, Karo Syrup, Honey and Lamp Oil

To find density of an object, you need the mass and volume of the object.

1. Mass- remember to use the balance.

2. Volume- there are 2 ways to find the volume of objects.

a. To find the volume of a circular object use a graduated cylinder.

-Measure some water in a graduated cylinder

-Drop the object and reread the graduated cylinder

Subtract the two numbers....you should always have a positive number.

200 mL 260 mLWater Water with Coin

Calculate the volume of the coin.

260 mL – 200 mL = 60 mL

60 mL = 60 cm3

b. To find the volume of a rectangular object use a ruler.

Volume = Length X Width X Heightcm3 cm x cm x cm

2 cm

1 cm

2 cm

2 cm X 1 cm x 2 cm = 4 cm3

What is the volume of the box??

5 cm 2 cm

3 cm

5 cm X 2 cm X 3 cm = 30 cm3

D = m / vm = D x vv = m / D

Ex: m = 2 g

v = 1 cm3

D = 2 g/ cm3

Ex: m = 6 g

v = 3 cm3

D = 2 g/ cm3

D = m / v

v = m / D

Ex: m =

v = 1cm X 2cm X 4cm

D = 2 g/cm3

m = 16 g

v = 8 cm3

D = 2 g/cm3

m = D x v
