Termination of Life

TYPES OF DEATH

• SOMATIC DEATH

• MOLECULAR OR CELLULAR DEATH

• BRAIN DEATH

SOMATIC DEATH

• Stopping of the vital signs., like,

Respiration

Cardiac action

MOLECULAR DEATH

• Also called as CELLULAR DEATH

• It is the termination of metabolic activities of individual cells

BRAIN DEATH

• Stopping of activity of brain

• Measured by EEG

• Vital signs can also present upto 20 minutes of brain death

BRAIN DEATH

TYPES OF BRAIN DEATH

• Cortical or cerebral death

• Brain stem death

• Whole brain death

CORTICAL DEATH

• Also called as cerebral death

• Causes a vegetative state with intact brain stem functions

BRAIN STEM DEATH

• Loss of function of brain stem centres

• Causes ceasing of breath

• Unconsciousness

• Can preserve life by artificial respiration.

WHOLE BRAIN DEATH

• Combination of cortical and brain stem death

VENTILATOR

IRREVERSIBLE COMMA

• It is also called as the partial brain death

• Occurs due to the hypoxic condition of brain

• Damages caused by this is irreverible

• Non-uniform damages

• Patient losses personality but able to live

AFTER BRAIN DEATH…

• Can transplant the internal organs of the patient

• Can permit the patient to die with dignity

• Can spare the financial, emotional, and material resources of the patient’s family

AFTER BRAIN DEATH…?

• Brain death should be confirmed by EEG

• Report should be given by two independent doctors

• The doctor should not be a member of transplant team
