Value scales can be used as shading practice and as a guide to determine if you achieved the

correct values in an artwork.

Value Scale

Good art has a variety of value, from the blackest black, to the whitest white.

The first is STIPPLING, shading with DOTS.

Shading by smoothing out the

values so they “blend” into each other. We can use a blending-stamp.

CREATE A CUBIST SELFPORTRAIT in COLOUR OR BLACK AND WHITE

1. You will create a self-portrait using a photocopy of your face.

2. Copy the outlines and shapes of your face with a pencil.

3. Draw lines with a ruler on top of the drawing of your face.

4. Use colour pencils or graphite pencils to complete your “cubist self portrait”.
