Community Participation
Do you think you participate in your
community?
What is community
participation?
Are you involved in different initiatives to
improve your community?
This module wants to provoke you to think about your community involvement and participation, and especially about your participation as a family at your children’
school.
There are five different levels of family participation at schoolsAs defined by the study “INCLUDE-ED Strategies for inclusion and social cohesion in Europe from education” (p.31):
Informative: families are informed but do not take part in
decisions of schools
Consultative: families participate on decision making but only
through statutory bodies and their impact is limited
Decisive: families and community members are representatives on
decision-making bodies, and consequently they participate in
decision-making processes.
Evaluative: families and community members participate
in learning processes of pupils through the evaluation of pupils’
progress.
Educative: families and community members participate
in learning processes of pupils during and after the school hours
and they participate in educational programmes which
respond to their needs
During this module we will discuss: models of citizenship, children and youngsters’ participation, educating
cities, the community and their resources, parents organisations.
Which do you think is your type of participation?
Would you like to change it?
Democracy is directly related to
participation. It is time to start thinking
about it!
Democracy is… POSSIBLE
