The "modern individual," a convenient fiction of the 19th and 20th centuries, is giving way to a more fluid understanding of the human condition, and inspiring some thinkers to postulate that we're entering a "posthuman" age. Yet our legal, economic, and institutional systems are still tied to the notion of "individual" rights and responsibilities. How can we update these systems to accommodate such changes, and what are the risks if we don't?
