COMMUNITIES & SACRAMENTALITY

WHAT IS SACRAMENTALITY?

“An action, such as the Sign of the Cross, a ceremony

resembling a sacrament, or a sacred object, regarded as

being instituted by the Church… and serving as a

means of receiving sanctifying grace.”

DICTIONARY DEFINITION:SACRAMENTAL

The foundational concept and reality of this course is sacramentality.

This can be understood as a quality of things – objects, words, signs, people

– by which unseen and intangible realities are communicated by way of

sensorial means.

COURSE DEFINITION

The human person is a sacrament – someone that reveals the unseen, such as emotions, by way of his or

her actions, words, facial expressions, sometimes even in ways

that are unintentional.

PERSON AS SACRAMENTAL

HOW CAN WE TELL WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO AN

INDIVIDUAL?

The fact that people are sacramental is not just relegated to the individual. These expressive signs are necessarily

communal. A hug, handshake, facial expression – all bear a communal and societal meaning.
