Differentiated Instruction: What
differences may I see this year?
By: Christina Roy
Differentiated Instruction- What is it?
It is very important that students realize that every students have different strengths and weaknesses. Differentiated instruction allows teachers to build on each student’s individual strength and weaknesses. This might mean that different students are doing different things.
Think about: Your strengths and weaknesses in sports. Maybe you can shoot free throws in basketball but struggle playing tennis. It is my job as a teacher to help you improve on both of those things!
Fair means that everyone must follow the rules, respect and encourage each other, but that not everyone will be doing the same thing at the same time.
Students
A Students’ Role in DI It is important that YOU have opportunities to be
partners with me, the teacher, to decide what you will be working on (based on interest), what work is challenging and what is too easy, etc.
We will have individual conferences every week where we can talk about this!
Parents
DI… What is it?
Think about your child’s developmental milestones. Were they the same as other kids or different?
This is a good way think about DI. Not all students develop at the same rate. In a DI classroom, teachers work with a child where they are at and work to help them make improvements.
A DI classroom looks different than a normal classroom. However…..
The goal of DI is to make sure EVERY INDIVIDUAL student grows
Assessment is important to the DI model and individual conferencing happens regularly
A goal of DI is to help all students become independent learners
Questions or Concerns?
It is very important that you, as parents, participate in the process of educating your children. You have valuable insight about who your child is outside of my classroom doors. Please feel free to reach out via email or phone.
