Scenario: A funding committee whose membership

consists of Bill and Melinda Gates, Sheik Mohammed, and a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) has $90 million.

The committee will listen to presentations from 6 groups, each of which will present a case in behalf of funding for efforts to combat an issue afflicting some African countries.

The committee will divide the $90 million among the three groups whose presentations were the most persuasive. (The class will act as the committee.)

Divide the class into six groups.

Randomly assign each group one of the following issues: Malaria, Ebola, Cholera, Illiteracy, Famine and Poverty.

There is only enough money to fund 3 of the 6 groups and explain that the 3 groups to be funded will be chosen on the basis of the quality of their case.

Presentation:

1) A description of the issue

2) Your plan of action (solution) if you were funded by the committee….how you would spend the money to treat, cure, or eliminate the issue.

3) Complete the handout!

FAMINE

Cause• Drought: lack of rainfall for

an extended time• Poor farming practices• Corrupt Governments• Rapidly growing populations

Famine

FAMINEAfrican areas that have been largely

affected by famine are in the countries of Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Sudan. All of these countries have been marked by corrupt governments as well as lack of rain fall.

What do you think the possible solutions are for this problem?

MALARIA Malaria is a sickness spread through

mosquito bites. Those who are mostly affected are infants to

5-6 years of age. 90% of deaths occur in Sub Sahara Africa There are medications available to treat

Malaria as well as vaccinations to prevent it. These vaccinations usually cost money.
