CENTER OF GRAVITY

Center of Gravity• the point at which all the weight of an

object maybe considered to be concentrated

• point at which the object may be supported and balanced (when the only force acting on object is gravity)

• center of balance (stability)

• may be outside the object

• c.g. or c.o.g.

C.o.g. of uniform or regular shaped object is at the geometric center of the object

C.o.g. of irregular shaped object is determined by:

1. suspension method

the object is suspended by any means and is allowed to come to equilibrium

2. Mathematical Method

1.

2. A meter stick weighs 200 grams.

Three masses of 100, 200, 150 grams

are placed at the 10-cm, 20-cm, and

60-cm points, respectively, of the

meter stick. Where is the center of

gravity of the system?

Seatwork ½ cross.
