“Weird stuff” in this session

• Video games• Playaways• Streaming media• Realia

PLUS:• Resources, both print and online, to improve your cataloging experience

WEIRD FORMAT #1:VIDEO GAMES

http://www.flickr.com/photos/the-jedi/2109602820/in/pool-dscollections

Sources of Information

• Per AACR2 Chapter 9:– Chief source: “The resource itself,” including the

disc/cartridge label– Alternate source: Information printed on a

container issued by the publisher, distributor, etc. (much easier)

245 0 0Dragon quest heroes $h [electronic resource] : $b rocket slime.

MARC 007

• Use the “Electronic Resource” 007 for video games• Omit any optional fields that are not relevant• $a (category of material): c (“electronic resource”)• $b (specific material designation): dependent on

format of game• o (optical disc games, e.g., Nintendo Wii, Playstation, Xbox)• b (chip cartridge games, e.g., Nintendo DS)• c (disc cartridge games, e.g., PSP)

MARC 007

• $d (color): c (multicolored) for games in current release

• $e (dimensions): dependent on format of game– g (4¾ in.; 12 cm.) for optical disc games EXCEPT

Nintendo GameCube (which uses smaller discs)– z (unknown) for Nintendo DS, Nintendo

GameCube, and PSP• $f (sound): a (includes sound) for games in

current release

MARC 020 and 024

• 020: ISBN– Not frequently used with video games, but should

be included when available

• 024: UPC– Very helpful when searching for copy records– First indicator 1; second indicator blank

MARC 260: Publication Information

• This information is usually found on the back of the video game case

260 _ _ Santa Clara, CA : $b Namco Bandai, $c c2005.

MARC 300: Physical Description

• $a: number of physical units (usually 1) plus a term designating the type of item:– computer optical disc (XBox, Wii, Gamecube,

Playstation) – computer chip cartridge (Nintendo DS game)– computer optical disc cartridge (PSP)

• $b: other physical details– Usually “sd., col.” for games in current release

• $c: dimensions– Xbox/Nintendo Wii/Playstation: 4¾ in. (standard CD or

DVD size)– Nintendo DS: 1 3/8 in.– PSP: 2½ in.

• $e: Accompanying Material– Most video games include a booklet—if you’re planning to

circulate the booklet, you should include it in the record!

MARC 300: Physical Description

MARC 5XX: Notes

• Order of notes is given in Chapter 9. As with other nonprint formats, the order of notes in AACR does not correspond with numerical order of the MARC fields for notes.

MARC 538: System Requirements• Usually found on the back cover of the container

– What is required and what isn’t required?– Phrases such as “wi-fi compatible,” “analog control,” and “wireless DS

multi-card play” are not system requirements. Some of the statements regarding connectivity are requirements for online or multiplayer play.

Nintendo Wii System Requirements

• 538 _ _ System requirements: Nintendo Wii video game system.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/robfahey/148381238/

Nintendo DS System Requirements

• 538 _ _ System requirements: Nintendo DS video game system.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/the-jedi/2081183252/

Xbox 360 System Requirements

• 538 _ _ System requirements: Xbox 360 video game system ; 5800 KB to save game.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/justinbaeder/13852647/

PlayStation 3 System Requirements

• 538 _ _ System requirements: Playstation 3 video game system ; required hard disk space, 2 GB.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/shellac/44747959/

PSP System Requirements• 538 _ _ System requirements: Playstation

Portable video game system ; Memory Stick Duo 544 KB.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshb/22422508/

PlayStation 2 System Requirements

• 538 _ _ System requirements: Playstation 2 video game system ; memory card, 100

KB. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joachim_s_mueller/432507497/

MARC 500: Source of Title Proper

• If the title proper is taken from a source other than the disc label, cite the source of the title proper.– 500 _ _ Title from container.

500: Number of Players

• Listing the number of people who can play the video game is helpful. (This is where information about additional requirements for multiplayer should be added.)– 500 _ _ 1 player.– 500 _ _ 1 player, with optional 2-4 wireless DS

multi-card play.– 500 _ _ 1-2 players.– 500 _ _ 1 player, with optional wi-fi multiplayer

mode (2-8 players).

MARC 521: Audience/Rating

• This note is optional. Some libraries include rating information in MARC records, others do not.

• The first indicator in a 521 for a video game should be 8 (no display constant generated).

• Preface the rating with the phrase “ESRB rating.”– 521 8 _ ESRB rating: E10+ (Everyone 10+), for fantasy

violence.– 521 8 _ ESRB rating: T (Teen), for animated blood, fantasy

violence.– 521 8 _ ESRB rating: E (Everyone), for mild violence.

520: Summary

• A summary note for video games is optional. However, it is potentially useful.

• Often, enough information can be gleaned from the back cover of the game to write an effective summary:– 520 _ _ Crash Bandicoot and his sidekick, Coco, team up to

defeat Dr. Neo Cortex and Crunch, his Super-Bandicoot.

• If there isn’t enough information on the package to write a summary, Wikipedia is an excellent source for video game summaries.

Main and Added Entries• In the vast majority of video games (including

all of the 350+ that I have cataloged), the title serves as the main entry.

• Added entries are provided for the corporate body responsible for producing/creating the video game, per 21.30E1.– 710 2 _ Nintendo of America Inc.– 710 2 _ Konami of America Inc.– 710 2 _ Sony Computer Entertainment.
