What is in the shot? (THIS MAKES SURE YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE).

What is the effect? What does it communicate? Why has it been used?

The key thing here is to make sure that you: Correctly identify some of the techniques that are being used and explain HOW and WHY they have been used. I.E. – What techniques are used and what is the intended effect on the audience? What is the director trying to communicate to the audience by using the technique?

So, if itʼs a chase scene it is supposed to be fast paced and exciting - this fits the action adventure genre and is enjoyable for the audience. How do the camera techniques make it seem fast and exciting?

There is a wide angle tracking shot used in the extract.

The director uses this shot when Neo is running against a wall while shooting from 2 guns at his numerous opponents.The tracking shot connotes Neo’s skill as it clearly signifies that he is able to move quickly to evade being shot himself while at the same time he is firing from 2 weapons with considerable success. This is exciting for the audience as they can see that Neo is -outnumbered and therefore in great jeopardy but his extra-ordinary abilities which are showcased by the tracking shot suggest that he will be victorious and able to continue with his quest.Neo’s ability with the guns is also signified by a close up…

POINT – A close up shot is used to show that the antagonists are better equipped than the protagonists.EXAMPLE – The director uses a close up of a deadly metal spike that is attached to the wheel of a chariot that the antagonists use.ANALYSIS – This connotes that this is not a fair fight and that the protagonists are expected to die in the coliseum. They have no such weaponry or equipment and are fighting on foot. The director uses a tilt in the camera movement. This is used when the thieves are breaking out of the window to zipline from one building to another. This has been used to signify the height of the building, emphasizing the danger and risk they are taking which creates tension, making it exciting for the audience. Furthermore, it connotes the thieves are dangerous and skilled as they are willing to zip-line over great heights to achieve their goal and not get caught.
