This is the story of X, the senior flight attendant on board of Pan Am Flight 73 landed in Karachi from Bombay for Frankfurt and onward to New York City, on the morning of September 5, 1986. Unfortunately, the flight was hijacked while it was parked on the tarmac at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. X helped a number of passengers escape. She was murdered while shielding three children from terrorist fire, less than 25 hours before her 23rd birthday. For her actions on the day of the hijacking, X was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration, and the ‘Tamgha-e-Insaniyat’, awarded by the Pakistan government for showing incredible kindness. She also posthumously received multiple awards for her courage from the United States government. A film commemorating her bravery is going to hit the Indian silver screen shortly.

X was born into a family of Bangladeshi refugees. Since his father had just his tiny sweet shop as the only source of income, he was raised with limited resources. His father struggled to give him good education, but somehow managed to send the boy to Dhaka University to study statistics. It was in 1985, he started working for BRAC, an international development agency based in Bangladesh. The organisation trained him and appointed as a field officer in one of the most poverty-stricken areas of Bangladesh. Besides an Rs 1.75 lakh borrowed from a local moneylender at an interest rate of 7.5 percent per month, the Rs 25,000 borrowed from his sister and brother-in-law was the only capital for his work as no commercial bank was willing to give money. In the early days, he had only two staff members — Partha Samanta and Fatik Bera.
