How to prepare for the English Section in IBPS PO 2015 Prelims

You just need to secure the

sectional cutoff of english section.

The entire game is based on speed and accuracy.

Aim to secure the Sectional Cutoff !

Before you go ahead,

understand that your aim is not to

secure 100 % marks in the

English section.

Just aim to achieve the sectional cut off.

The Sectional Cutoff for….

General Category candidates is 5.75

OBC/SC/ST/VH/OH is 3.25

To get through the Prelims, aim for 7.

There is no point to try to attempt all the questions in the exam.

Just try to attempt 20 questions in this section.

Attempt only those types of questions, on which, you have good command.

Now let me tell you the things which you should know.

Given below is the categorical

distribution of 30 questions, which

will be asked in the English Section of IBPS PO Prelims

Exam.

comprehension

reading

It is given to test the ability of a candidate to comprehend the passage.

The best way is to read the

questions first, and then read the

passage questioned.

Let me write this once again, read

the questions first, very

carefully, before reading the passage.

Be very careful while attempting the Synonyms and Antonyms part.

Here, the words are not used in the general sense.

You have to identify the

sense in which a particular

word is used.

In Bank PO exams, it is seen

that all the options are

identical. In fact, all seem

CORRECT.

However, because every word has

multiple meanings, you have to mark the choice which clearly explains the sense in

the particular context.

Do not skim or scan the paragraph.

Read carefully, because if you skim or scan,

you will have to read and re-

read it.

Never assume anything.

Answer according to what is given in the passage.

Do not use general knowledge/ general facts to answer.

Read the first and the last paragraph twice.

read the first and the last line of each paragraph very carefully.

Reading Comprehension (other tips)

37

There are four more things which you must do.

1. Read newspaper daily

Most of the times reading

comprehension paragraphs are taken from "The

Hindu".

And therefore, you need to read the editorial section every day.

The writing style is really difficult to

understand, but If you want to be good

at attempting the reading

comprehension thing, you have to read

"The Hindu".

Begin with subscribing “The Chronicle” first;

after three or four months, start

subscribing “Times of India”; after three or

four months, start reading “The Hindu”.

Every day, if you spend 20 minutes

in reading "The Hindu", you will be

at ease with attempting the

reading comprehension

questions.

If you are not reading “The

Hindu” you are simply wasting

your time.

2. Improve your vocabulary

You need to work on your vocabulary.

Reading wordlists will not help.

The best way to improve your vocabulary is to study Etymology.

What is etymology?

Etymology is the study of the origin of words and the

way in which their meanings have

changed throughout history.

Here are the 7 reasons, why you should study etymology.

3. Use Dictionary

You must have Oxford Advanced English Dictionary (the meanings are explained in simple

English).

Or Cambridge Advanced English Dictionary (how a particular word is used/ should be

used).

4. Work on your Reading Speed

Read as much as you can. It will increase your

reading /comprehending

speed.

Cloze test

A passage with 5 blanks.

Read the passage first, without even thinking to attempt it.

If you have attempted

several (thousand) cloze tests, it will be much easier for

you to understand the

“story”.

In cloze tests, the good thing is that all the sentences are

logically connected.

And if you understand the

“story”, it will be easier for you to

fill the appropriate word

in the blank space.

Sentence

improvement

Here you have to insert the most appropriate choice.

If you have attempted

10,000 or more such exercises…

you can improve the

sentence just by reading it.

It is just a matter of practice.

spot the error

Here, you have to find that part, which is incorrect.

If you have attempted

10,000 or more such exercises…

you can spot the grammatical

errors just by reading it.

Fill in the blanks

Use the method of elimination.

Just like no one can teach you how to ride a bicycle, it is only you, who has to fall several times, before you can ride it with confidence; you have to attempt several (thousand)

times.

Jumbled Paragra

phs

Here, you need to rearrange four sentences in a logical sequence.

try to understand the basic idea of the given passage.

It will help you to arrange sentences quickly.

The best way is to look at the

answers and then arrange the

sentences in the order given in the

answers.

However, as far as possible,

avoid attempting

Jumbled Paragraphs.

Concentrate on attempting the questions from other sections.

Manage your time

wisely

This is the distribution of 30 questions, which will be asked in

the English Section of IBPS

PO Prelims Exam.

Do not spend more than 15 minutes in attempting the English section.

If any question takes more than 30 seconds, leave it.

With practice, you will understand what sections you are good at.

And you should attempt only those sections which you are good.

As I said earlier, you need to attempt only 20 questions correctly.

If you have attempted 20

questions correctly, and if

you are attempting more,

you are only wasting your

time.

practice

Practice as many sets as humanly possible.

That is all from my side, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
