TABLEAU

•What ?

Children make series of still images with bodies to represent sequences of scenes or events.

Their expressive faces, body poses and how they pose in relationship to one another create a living picture.

• Why? An effective strategy to develop

pupils comprehension through the process of producing/creating a tableau.

No movement, easier to manage.Children will actively engage in the

reading process and use a variety of strategies to understand it.

• How?

a) Choose a text. b) Identify the important of the story. c) Identify the beginning, middle and

the end of the story.d) Develop the comprehension of

place, characters, plot, etc

• How?e) Divide pupils in 3 groups.f) Teacher coaches in the use of the actor’s tool and skills. (body, face, voice and imagination)g) Present the tableau.h) Reflect on the tableau

• Masked Theatre is such a fantastic unit to teach THE students because there are so many styles of masked theatre that you can explore.

• It also allows students to think about their physicality.

SHOW AND TELL

1. Collect a selection of different types of masks or pictures of different types of masks and lay them on the floor for the class to look at.

2. use a selection of masks that THE previous classes have made.

3. WE can also find a selection of masks from films, masquerade, Commedia, Noh, Kabuki, tribal etc.

4. Discuss what they notice about the masks (colour, size, features). Ask the students to consider why masks were used in early performances.

• Provide some reading material on the background to masked theatre.

• focus on information that looks at the duality of mask.

Types of mask• NEUTRAL MASK:

Expressionless, no character. Usually full face.

• CHARACTER MASK:

Includes features which exaggerate the sex and expressions.

• FULL FACE MASK:

Covers the entire face. Can’t speak.

• HALF MASK: Shows character. Can speak.
