What is clip art?

Clip art are ready made images which are usually supplied free with software that can be used to decorate a document.

pros

•Images are always available as they are always there.

•Hardware like scanners and cameras do not have to be purchased

•Clip art can reduce cost of design process as a designer does not have to be processed.

•Quality of image is different

•Not all images that are needed are always available. There is a limited amount of pictures

•Some clip art images have copy right if they are taken from the internet.

What are graphic libraries?

Graphic libraries are specialist applications developed with the involvement of manufacturers.

They are used for applications like:

•Kitchen designs – standard symbols used for kitchen appliances which are used when designing a kitchen layout.

•Map making – also know as cartography. Contains symbols used by the Ordinance Survey (OS) so that maps can be created.

•Network design – contain industry standard symbols for main components needed in a network e.g. cabling.

•New components are not always available immediately

Vector graphics:

Graphics saved as geometric equations

Bitmap graphics:

Graphics saved as pixels

Produced when a scanner or camera is used. Clip art are saved as bitmap images. This means that clip arts can be changed or edited according to the need of the user. Bitmap images can be saved as JPEG or GIF files.

Used in CAD packages. Enables users to changed size of their drawings, mainly architects. They are important where dimensions are used.
