“ANDREI MUREŞANU”

HIGH SCHOOL

BRAŞOV

BRAŞOV

It is a town which is said to have everything you need. Both in winter and in summer forests surround it as an endless belt, hiding the old medieval buildings of the former guilds.

Any trip to Brasov means visiting the historic center of the town: " Casa Sfatului", Liberty Square, the "triangle" formed by the three central streets leading to the Black Church, the oldest catholic church in Brasov, considered the historical centre of the city.

Town Hall Square

The old square, with the Town Hall, is the best-known symbol of Brasov, being the favourite meeting and walking place both for tourists and natives.

Sfatului Square and The Black Church

Brasov still preserves nowadays an old architectural inheritance which resisted time

The Black Church The Black Church is built in

Transylvanian (late) gothic style in the 15th century.

The name was given after a great fire in 1689 because of the colour of the walls

Due to its dimensions (more than 89 m long) it is the largest religious building from Viena to Istanbul.

The Black Church is also famous for its organ, having more than 4000 tubes, one of the largest in South-East Europe. Periodically, there are organ concerts in the church which attract many tourists and art lovers.

LOCATION OF “ANDREI MUREŞANU” HIGH SCHOOL

The oldest part of the town-called Schei-is dominated by the slender silhouette of St. Nicholas Church, a genuine orthodox cathedral, founded and built by several "Voivodes" from Wallachia and Moldavia.

The old wooden gates are still preserved and the road side triptychs on the neighbouring hills confer an outstanding, unique colour to this part of Brasov-Schei.

It is also within St.

Nicolas Church walls that the building of the First Romanian School is located, the school being founded more than five centuries ago.

The museum shelters today valuable collections.

Brief history

Formerly known as The Normal School, or The Pedagogical High School, „Andrei Muresanu” High School has been functioning for 46 years. It was founded in 1949, but unfortunately its existence was interrupted in 1957. Starting with 1969 it has been functioning uninterruptedly.

Our school is the most complex institution in Brasov county, with pre-school children from the age of 3 to teenagers of 19. More than 750 pupils attend annually our kindergarten, primary school, lower secondary school (gymnasium) and high school

Being a school with a rich tradition behind and in the same time with a promising future forward, our school was distinguished with the current name of „Andrei Muresanu” in 1992.

The current name In May 1992, at our suggestion, the

Ministry of Education approved for our school to be named “Andrei Mureşanu”.

Andrei Mureşanu (1816-1863) - poet and publicist, close collaborator of George Baritiu, founder of the first newspaper in Transilvania

Mureşanu is the author of the well known poem “A Response” (“Un rasunet”), the lyrics for a musical composition that became the symbol for the Revolution of 1848, under the name “Desteapta-te, Romane!”, and currently is the national anthem of Romania.
