The art of seeing things differently

Photography can be an exciting hobby or can be an excellent career option. Photography can endow an individual with a whole new perspective of looking at things. Photographers see what others fail to see. My tryst with photography started pretty late in life. Only a few years back, I bought a basic “click and shoot” digital camera to capture pictures of an upcoming college reunion. At the reunion, I clicked pictures in the hundreds, thinking that I would be having a great collection of memories which I would share with all my friends.

After I came back home, I transferred the images on to my laptop and while viewing them, I wasn’t quite happy with my performance. I had thought that the digital camera would do its job and I would get professional quality images. How wrong was I? And just a couple of days later one of my friends posted his photos of the same reunion and they were a million times better than mine. The reality struck me. It is not the equipment but the person handling it that is important. The curiosity had been kindled and I decided to learn photography.

The very next day, I enquired about a course in DSLR photography at a reputed photography institute in my city. After getting the required information, I decided to invest in a decent DSLR camera. I bought one with the help of experts at the shop and promptly joined the course the following day.

The course lasted for 10 weekends and I learned all about digital camera techniques. The first thing I learnt was to “see” the subject in a way most individuals do not. I learnt the basics of light and the human eye and then went on to learn a great deal about the equipment we were handling – the camera.

Finally, we learned about composition guidelines and aesthetics of photography. And then we got some wonderful tips to shoot various subjects – people and nature. My DSLR photography training was the best thing that happened to me in recent years. I now began seeing photographs of other people differently. I started appreciating other people’s work and that motivated me to make my photographs better.

During my recent office function, I offered to be the photographer and used my new-found skills to capture some truly stunning moments on the screen. The end result was appreciated by all and that gave me immense confidence in my abilities.

Today, I see things differently, I observe “between the lines.” I appreciate nature better and in totality I have come to experience life in a whole new way. It is all thanks to learning photography.
