The 2011 Ohio Writing Project Youth Writing Camp

The OWP Youth Writing Camp philosophy is quite simple:

If you feed them, they will come…

… and if they come, they will write! (And write they did!)

The campers were working so hard, people stopped by and compared us to a shoe manufacturing sweatshop!

I wonder what gave them that idea?

Does anyone know what rhymes with

piano bacon?

Everyone smiled at camp!

Well, almost everyone.

If this were school, we might have offered extra credit if anyone properly used Arabidopsis thaliana in a poem.

Poor Julie and Sarah…

…they had nightmares for several nights after this activity!

Poetic inspiration can even be found on the labels attached to big, rusty, out-of-place argon tanks.

Pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie, pie,

Sorry folks, ya had to be there!

Huh-huh. Pie.

Parents, your kids wrote some awesome poetry!

Campers, I know you remember this small group “Found Poem”!

And, um, occasionally they wrote some not-so-great poetry…

Ode to a small lump of green putty I found in my armpit one midsummer morning.

(Just kidding! Our poetry was so good, we had to borrow that bit from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.)

Tee-hee!

Four score and seven years ago… Just kidding!

It’s not as easy as you think to write a love poem about zombies and Rebecca Black.

DESKS FOR WRITING?

WE DON’T NEED NO STINKING DESKS!

Have you ever tried to herd squirrels?

If so, then you know what it’s like getting 31 swimmers to spell Y-W-C!

If so, then you know what it’s like getting 31 swimmers to spell Y-W-C!

Are you taking a picture of me?

Of course not. I’m taking a picture of the

ant crawling on Alyssa’s arm.

Writing camp rocks!

And Eva isn’t the only one who thinks so!

WRITING CAMP ROCKS!

Campers, thanks for allowing us to write alongside you this week. You inspired us in new ways each day.

Parents, we really did enjoy your kids this week… but you can have them

back now! : )

Enjoy the rest of your summer! - Julie, Melissa, Roxanne, Matt, & Liz

A special thanks to Beth Rimer, Cassandra Thompson, Monica Fisher, and the other

OWP staff that guide and support this great camp

each year.

Without you this would not be possible.
