The Bahamas is a group of 700 islands in the Caribbean. The country´s capital city is Nassau.

English is the main language in the Bahamas, but they also speak the Bahamian Creole.

American, European and people from other countries, visit the islands in the Bahamas every year.

Around the 11th century AD, the Tainos moved into the southern Bahamas from Hispaniola and Cuba. First people living there were the Taino.

Much of the Lucayan population was pushed to moved to Hispaniola by the Spanish.

King Charles II rented out the islands to the Carolinas, along with rights of trading,tax and governing the country in 1670.

In 1718 Britain made the Bahamas a crown colony. Woodes Rogers was the first governor.

Nearly 500.000 people live in the Bahamas. The ethnic groups of the population are the following:82,1% African descent.15,4% European descent.2,5% Asian and other.

The climate of the Bahamas is subtropical to tropical. In summer and autumn the Gulf Stream can be very dangerous. In the Bahamas there has never been reported a freeze. The temperature can fall as low as 2-3ºC.
