WEATHER

There is no pronounced dry season and average annual pre-cipitation is approximately 38 inches. Average annual snow-fall is 17 inches . The area is located in the mean paths of winter North American storm tracks and moist tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico. Intense rainfall may occur at any time, but generally occurs between Decem-ber and April, in addition to summer rainstorms. The greatest amount of hillslope run-off also occurs between December and April. Flash floods may occur when sudden storms concentrate their rainfall on small watersheds.

Need advanced drainage system.

WIND

Pulaski County has a prevailing westerly-southwesterly wind during the warm season and a prevailing north-east-erly wind during the cold season. The year round av-erage surface velocity is eight miles per hour. Violent winds occasionally accompany severe storms, and gusts have been recorded in excess of 80 miles per hour.

The orientation of the buildings is better to be along the wind blowing direction.

SOIL

Soils in the vicinity of the lake are dominantly Braddock Loam (USDA NRCS, 2008). The soils in these units are suited to cultivate crops and to pasture and hay. The soils are predomi-nantly used for farming but have good poten-tial productivity for woodland. A seasonal high water table, a clay subsoil, and slope are the main limitations. The soils consist of high ter-races, broad ridge tops, and convex side slopes.

Because of the limitations, the foundation construction need to be considered carefully.

BOAT

The classic shapes of rowboats reflect an evolution of hun-dreds of years of trial and error to get a good shape. Some factors to be considered are waterline length, speed, carry-ing capacity, stability, windage, weight, seaworthiness, cost, waterline beam, the fullness or fineness of the ends and trim .

STORAGE

The storage room for rowing boats aften has a high roof, approximately 18’ high, with boats stored vertically in a row. A lifting mecanical system helps to move the boats from storage position.

Deciding how to arrange the deck.

WALL TYPE

According to different light and thermal condition in the different parts of the builiding, choose different wall types for interior and exterior.

STRUCTURE & SCREEN

Sketch for the connection between the main tension cable and the floor, using the similar method with other connec-tions in the building.

The screen functions as both sun-shading and rainscreen.

CONNECTION

Use a “sandwich” method at the connection of the main arch structure and the tension cables.

Divide the arch into two halfs, using the bracing member to enhance the strenth.

STUDY MODEL

The former edition of the building.

Bracing each column on both sides.

Light-weight gauge steel structure.

GRID

Creating a rigid array grid to make the whole building more stable, allowing better control of the plan.

Each unit is 20’x20’.

Light

Loius Kahn

The Light is coming through the gap between stair and wall, causing two light strip on the lower floor.

BOSTON CIRY HALL

Form The ceiling and the wall follow the same patten. One is Concaved but the other is convexed

YALE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY

Louis Kahn

Material

The left part is wood panel, the right part is brick wall, Kahn uses a glass gallary space to connect them carefully. The glass also allow the wall panels continue from in-side to outside.

Handrail

Handrails and guardrails are the same form but shift with each other in a distance. That makes them form an interest-ing geomet-ric shape but at the same time fit the code. Also the end of handrails and gaurdrails don’t touch the wall, left a gap there.

FOGG MUSEUM

Detail

The architect makes the glass panels and their frames ex-tend to the lower floor for about two feet, allow a space for artificial light to light up the ceiling. In that way people in the interior will also feel like the light is coming from the atrium.
