Wanna be happy in your career and at work?

(Dumb question, right?)

The cold, hard facts1. Before you can have it, you need to know what your career happiness looks like

and be able to describe it!2. It takes a lot of work to define it. It is also hard to get & hard to hold onto.

3. Your definition will change as you and the rest of your life changes.

What do you like/ love to do? Think about all parts of your life- personal, professional, hobbies, interests. Think about the stuff you would do happily, even if no one paid you for it. Don’t leave anything out!

When in your career have you been happiest? What specifically made that such a good time? (examples: the work itself was a good fit, good colleagues or leadership, you were a good fit with the organization)

Keep going…

What are you good at/great at? Even though you may feel like you are bragging, let it all out! You are good at many things. What are they? (Examples: coordinating events, solving challenging customer problems, fixing mechanical glitches, etc.)

What have you been told you are good at, or recognized for? Sometimes, we give more validation to what others we respect tell us we are good at. Look at your previous reviews, consider what people come to you for, or value about you.

Still More…

What will someone pay you to do? How can you use your “like to do/ good at” to make money? Do you know what the market is in your geography for your skills? Are you fully aware of the types of jobs and opportunities that exist? Have you thought about ways to package your skills and interests and position them for a prospective employer?

Network Like a Crazy Person! And how is that network? Other people are your very best source of info. They know what is going on where they work, and quite probably are tuned in to other places as well. And of course, the internet is a wealth of info.

Finally…

Where can you be successful? What cultures have you been most successful in? What is your preferred work style? Do the organizations products and services matter to you? For example, if you are a vegan, working for a poultry producer might not work for you , regardless of pay or any other factor. Think of places you have worked where you have felt most comfortable and most able to be successful. Break it down. Why was it such a good fit for you?

You must become a student of yourself and the career market!

Good luck!
