Rabbi’s Message
In this week’s Parsha of Vayera we are offered a glimpse into the lives of Avrahom and Sarah and their generous hospitality to three strangers. How generous was their hospitality? The Torah actually provides us with the menu they served. Among the items specified were tongue and mustard (not pastrami). Rav Pam once asked an interesting question. That tongue was served we can understand because fresh meat was provided – but where did the mustard come from? We could imagine that in the refrigerator of the Godol Hador all the necessary food staples were available, but mustard seems to be excessive. Rav Pam explains that Avraham and Sarah’s lives were Chessed for others. Whether Avraham or Sarah liked mustard or not is debatable, but they were always prepared for other people’s mustard. May we be blessed with the generosity of heart personified by Avraham and Sarah.
