INTRODUCTIONResidential Services is eager to help students
make plans to return to campus housing next
year. The vitality of the residential experience
depends on the thousands of students who live
on campus. This guide offers an overview of the
selection process (including key dates and
policies) as well as considerations like
residential areas, building characteristics,
and room types. Visit our website or contact
us at housing@northwestern.edu for
more information.

CAMPUSRISING 3RD & 4TH YEARSReturning residential undergraduate
students are able to reserve a space
in housing for the following academ-
ic year during the Winter and Spring
quarters. In order to reserve a space,
all students must complete the Con-
tract Terms and Conditions between
March 1 – 15 of that academic year.
General room selection and residen-
tial college placement will follow
in April. All rising 3rd and 4th years
are not required to live on campus.
Once rising 3rd and 4th years choose
their room during the room selection
process, they are contracted for the
following year. At this point these
rising 3rd and 4th years are not able
to cancel their housing contract.
Students will only be released from
housing for the following reasons:
(a) academic dismissal,
(b) disciplinary exclusion from the
University,
(c) marriage (a copy of the marriage
certificate must be filed),
(d) induction into military service,
(e) graduation, or
(f) health, upon written
recommendation of the University
Student Health Service.
RESIDENTIAL COLLEGESThe last day of winter finals is ordinarily
the last day to earn points toward room
selection status in a residential college.
Students should consult with the Faculty
Chair or executive board to ensure that their
college has not set an earlier date. Facul-
ty Chairs will submit rosters of students
(ordered by points) eligible to return to their
residential college to Residential Services,
which will divide the rosters into ordered
groups. Residential Services will email each
student identifying their group and time slot
to select a room. Group sizes have been set
in consultation with the Residential College
Board to maintain the spirit of the points
system and account for the diversity of
buildings.

RISING 2ND YEARSReturning residential undergradu-
ate students are able to reserve a
space in housing for the following
academic year during the Winter and
Spring quarters. In order to reserve
a space, all students must complete
the Contract Terms and Conditions
between March 1 – 15 of that aca-
demic year. General room selection
and residential college placement
will follow in April. All rising 2nd
years are required to live on campus.
Rising 2nd years who intend to live in
a fraternity or sorority house as part
of the residency requirement are still
required to complete a housing con-
tract. After your fraternity or sorority
house assignment has been verified
before the academic year, your
housing contract will be noted as
living in a fraternity or sorority.
Students will only be released from
housing for the following reasons:
(a) academic dismissal,
(b) disciplinary exclusion from the
University,
(c) marriage (a copy of the marriage
certificate must be filed),
(d) induction into military service,
(e) graduation, or
(f) health, upon written
recommendation of the University
Student Health Service.

Once logged in, click “Room Selection”.
You will be selecting rooms for the
2020-2021 academic year.
If you are the leader of a roommate group, accepted roommates will show in
the Confirmed Roommate box. If someone is missing, that means they either
did not accept the invitation or they already booked themselves a room.
Select your building by clicking the building name under Available Rooms by
Living Area.
Click on the building you want to choose.

FAQ8
Use the grey drop down arrow to display more information about the room.
CLICK THE “LOCK” BUTTON TO SECURE THE ROOM.
Once you click “lock”, you will have 10 minutes to complete the
selection process.
FAQDoes it matter when I sign up for housing? All students who complete an online housing contract March 1-15 will have equal chance when priority numbers for room selection are generated. Students who complete a contract after March 15 will be placed at the bottom of the list.
How are priority numbers for room selection generated, and when are they distributed?Priority numbers are based on when you entered Northwestern, not your class standing. Priority numbers are randomly generated and e-mailed to students at least one week before room selection.
How do priority numbers work for roommate groups? All students who complete housing contracts receive a priority number. Within a roommate group, the student with the best (or “controlling”) priority number will log in and pick for other members. Group size determines the rooms available for selection.
Can students serve as proxies for other students? No. Students who need a proxy should contact Residential Services in advance to arrange for selection support.
Does a roommate group need to fill all the rooms of a suite to select it? And what if there are no suites left when a roommate group is making selections?Roommate groups are capped at four (4) and do not need to fill a suite; however, they cannot leave a space open in a double room. If there are no suites, roommate groups can be modified by contacting Residential Services.
What if a roommate group does not fill all of its bed spaces during selection or a group member drops out later?Residential Services will fill any empty bed spaces on be-half of the group. The group cannot make changes after the initial selection.
If a student signs a housing contract with a fraternity or sorority, can they also complete a housing contract and go through the Residential Services room selection process? No. By informing Residential Services of your intention to live in a fraternity or sorority house, you are confirming your housing plans for the upcoming school year.
What options are there for gender-open housing? Can I change my mind?Gender-open housing options are detailed on the Residen-tial Services website. As with all room selections, changes can be made via Residential Services after the room selec-tion process concludes.
Can I cancel my housing contract once I’ve selected a room? No. Exceptions are made only for approved purposes. If the group member with the “controlling” priority number can-cels their contract, then the entire group’s room selections will be canceled and remaining members will need to make new selections after the general process concludes. Students will only be released from housing for the following reasons: (a) academic dismissal, (b) disciplinary exclusion from the University, (c) marriage (a copy of the marriage certificate must be filed), (d) induction into military service, (e) graduation, or (f) health, upon written recommendation of the University Student Health Service.
