From the Principal 8th March, 2018
Dear Parents,
Good luck Mrs Smith Last week we farewelled on maternity leave, our new Deputy Principal Mrs Kiri Smith. On behalf of the whole school
community I would like to wish Kiri and her husband all the very best for the safe arrival of their first child. Such an
exciting time!
3-Way Goal Setting meetings In recent weeks we have been doing a lot of work to focus on the learning goals that children have devised in our
round of 3-way goal setting meetings. These goals are an important reference as we will be reviewing progress on
them throughout this year. Thank you to the many parents who attended with their children. We have had fabulous
feedback about this initiative and it was great to have such a successful turnout.
Top staff carpark Thank you to all members of our school community for your fabulous cooperation in dealing with the parking issues
of late. Everyone showed excellent patience and we now have a lovely new and safe area for particular parents to
drop off children with special requirements.
Thank you for a great start to the year Our school year has started with a very solid feel to the school, classrooms and plans and I thank staff for the work
they have done in ensuring the school year started at a high standard.
Thanks also, to our parents, for the support shown to children in starting a positive school year.
It’s hard to believe we are already at Week 6 of Term 1 so I can see that there is another busy and fantastic year
ahead for us all here at York.
Ms Anne Bahnisch, Principal
From the Deputy Principal It is with great sadness that last week was my last week at York for 2018. I am now venturing
into the unknown journey of motherhood but I assure you I will be back and you will see me
around the school - how could I stay away!
York is such a lovely learning place and this is because of the amazing students, great families and talented staff
members. I thank every single person for making me feel so welcome. I am so grateful for the people I have met
and engaged with over the last five weeks as each person has taught me something and I am better for it. It doesn’t
seem like I have only been here for five weeks as it feels like home on so many fronts. Every single minute has
been a joy. I am blessed to have come back to the place I grew up and also a phenomenal school and I look
forward to coming back in 2019.
From the bottom of my heart - thank you, thank you, thank you!

WORDS FROM A FEW OF OUR CAPTAINS & PREFECTS
INDUCTION CEREMONY
Talia - Be your best means always trying your hardest. Be
the best you can be in school, sport and by being the best
person you can. Doing your best is more important than
being the best.
Michael - Here at York we value integrity. Integrity means
being honest and having powerful moral principles. We
model this at York by being truthful all of the time by doing the right thing and being reliable. Always stand up for
your mistakes and have responsibility for your actions.
Briana - Honesty and trustworthiness. York Public School shows honesty and trustworthiness. It isn’t just shown
for one person nor class. Honesty is speaking the truth. Trustworthiness is the ability to be relied on as a faithful
person. Our school reflects honesty and trustworthiness in every situation.
Lily – Respect. To show respect, is to care enough about other people’s feelings before you act. We show respect
by listening to our teachers and simply following our school values! Every human being of whatever origin, no
matter who you are deserves respect. A fair go for all is an Australian term for giving everyone a chance. I strongly
believe it means that whatever your ability is, you get to have a try and nobody gets left out.
At York Public School we can make sure Yorkies do not get left out. We can include everyone in our games. We can
listen and respect everyones opinions. We can help each other in the playground and classroom. A fair go for
everyone means everyone gets to have their time to shine!
Paige - Being respectful is very important at York and it is everyone’s duty to make it a great place to come and
learn. Here at York we understand that not every student is the same, we all come from different religions,
nationalities and learning capabilities.
Our school strives to be a tolerant school and while we may not always agree with certain things that may be said
or certain beliefs of others, we must always try our best to respect them at all times. Inclusion means including all
your friends, class, peers and others in the school either in class activities or in the playground no matter what their
colour, religion or learning capabilities.
THANK YOU to everyone that helped at the CAKE STALL yesterday – either by donating food and/or volunteering
at the stall. We raise $731.50 which will help to organise the upcoming FETE.
The FETE is now 7 months away. Please follow the ‘York Public School Fete’ Facebook page to keep up-to-date
with any information. At the moment FETE MEETINGS ARE HELD ON THE FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH but this
will change to fortnight meetings in a couple of months time.

School Banking Day is Friday Thank you for having me at your school last Friday. It was a great day to talk to the parents and the students. Many students had a look at the new Rewards for 2018 and brought home information about the School Banking program.
Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for your school. Your school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5.00 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year. If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.
Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at York Public School. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

ETHICS CLASSES AT YORK PUBLIC SCHOOL
Dear parents and carers,
Ethics classes have commenced at York Public School and will be available for children in Year 1.
Each week the children will discuss a topic from the approved Primary Ethics curriculum. Ethics classes include scenarios, poems and stories, group work and activities to encourage the children to think about what they should do in different situations, about how those circumstances might make a difference and about the consequences of their actions
Children discuss topic such as:
-imagining how others feel
-how do we treat living things?
-how do we disagree in a respectful way?
-fairness
Ethics classes are taught by volunteer ethics teachers. If you would like your child to learn these valuable lifelong skills, then consider volunteering so that we can offer the program to all stages.
Grandparents and other members of your family and friends’ network might be interested – so please speak to them about volunteering.
Lesson plans are provided by Primary Ethics, so you don’t need to create your own lessons. Ethics teachers receive full training through online modules and a comprehensive 2 day training workshop..
If you have been considering teaching ethics or you know of a friend or family member who might be interested in volunteering, please visit the Primary Ethics website at www.primaryethics.com.au or contact the Volunteering Manager, Maria McCarthy, at maria.mccarthy@primaryethics.com.au or 0410 348 574
Parents / Carers – We now have a Skoolbag App for York Public School – please read below and
