Dear reader:
A while ago I began a website to curate all of the things I had made throughout my life, in order to keep a consistent and searchable record for myself, and also as a means of passing my ideas and creations to other people who might enjoy them. In doing so, I’ve thought a lot about the process of creation in its many forms, and what it’s really for. I’ve come to believe that any creation becomes more meaningful when shared with other people, because it can touch more lives, take on new forms, and accomplish things not possible when it’s squirrelled away from the rest of the world.
I also realized that if something were to happen to me, most of the things I had created would live on and survive without me. Robots, artwork, written stories… all of those things can exist on their own more or less right after the moment of creation. However, such is not the case with music. I realized that I had a lot of songs that really only existed in my head and during the actual moment I was playing them. Music is something of an ethereal art form in that sense: it’s something that really can only exist in the moment. Sure, music may exist recorded on hard drives or written on paper, but is that really music? I would argue that it’s only the skeleton of it at best. The actual sound—which can only exist temporarily—must breathe life into it.
Having thought these thoughts, I realized that my music didn’t have any such skeletal form, and therefore it really had no means of being enjoyed by anyone without me playing it. And so I began the process of writing it all out, so that anyone could enjoy it any time. And I’m extremely glad I did—because in doing so I realized something about my music that I hadn’t known before.
Many of these songs read as prayers, and I often play them as such. In writing them out, it became quickly apparent to me that I didn’t have the skill to play these songs, much less to write them. I discovered key changes and time signature changes I didn’t know I had included, lots of complex dotted quarter and eighth note passages with syncopated rhythms… I found after having written out many of the songs that if I were to look in a songbook and see this music, I would quickly pass over it believing I wouldn’t be able to play it. That leads me to believe that I must have had a lot of help writing them, and is the reason I’m very glad I took the effort to give these songs a means of transmission to other people. If these were just little ditties I’d come up with on my own, and they ceased to exist without me, I wouldn’t be too bothered by it. But as it is, I suspect these songs were not written by me so much as through me, and I feel it’s my duty to pass them along as best I can.
I hope these songs might speak to you as they have to me.
Dylan Brenneis
P.S. In the true spirit of open-source ideas, if you feel the need to modify these songs, please do. Change a lyric, change a chord, add a solo or bridge…whatever helps the music become more meaningful to you.
