YASS HIGH SCHOOL W e v a l u e r e s p e c t , r e s p o n s i b i l i t y , s a f e t y a n d l e a r n i n g .
Principal: Linda Langton Deputy Principals: Andrew Facer & Ruth Riach
From the Principal
Life continues to be busy at Yass HS. The refurbishment of the front
office area has been completed over the weekend with the installation
of a new shutter to provide security for this newly painted, carpeted and
furnished space. The decoration of the foyer continues as we create a
welcoming entrance to our school.
With NAIDOC Day quickly approaching, we are very pleased to have
installed a second flag pole to fly the Aboriginal flag next to the
Australian flag. My thanks go to Mrs Kemp’s class, particularly Blake
Wheatley and Caitlin Webb, for raising and lowering both flags each
day.
As the days grow colder, I am appreciating the manner in which most of
our students are wearing the new uniform. Please contact your child’s
Deputy Principal if you have any concerns or queries related to uniform.
Warm, easily identifiable children are our top priority.
Cold winter mornings can make getting out of bed a challenge. Thank
you to all our students and their supportive parents for arriving at school
on time and ready to learn. Research clearly shows a strong link
between good attendance at school, high achievement and future life
success.

From the Deputies
Welcome to winter! With the cold and the rain we will be flexible around break areas,
sometimes some areas (oval, park) will be closed, and we may open other areas
such as the IL space so students can be warm during breaks. If we are to do this,
however, students will need to respect the area and be responsible by ensuring that
all food scraps and packaging go in the bins provided, and that furniture is tidied and
ready to be used for learning in the next lesson. Please listen out for the loudspeaker
if there are changes to be made.
There have been some issues lately with students sharing their passwords on their
phones, or using a friend’s phone to access social media, and then not clearing the
password afterwards. Online safety is so important, please do not share your
passwords or allow others to use your login on the computers.

Captain’s Corner
Hey guys! Welcome to this week's Captains Corner for Week 6.
Firstly we would just like to congratulate those representing the school in
extracurricular activities, most recently those who travelled to Goulburn for Zone
Cross Country and those competitors who have qualified through to the regionals.
Congratulations also to the Boys and Girls Open Touch teams who played in
freezing conditions last Monday in the South Coast Top 8 Comp, the Girls team
placed 4th in their pool and the boys fell short to Kiama in the final.
The SRC recently have been putting in some effort into a return and earn fundraiser.
Donate your plastic bottles for 10c. If you'd guys like more information on that feel
free to see SRC Rep Blake Wheatley who is the main driving force behind this
fundraiser.
For this week we have awarded our lovely admin staff our Teacher of the Week
award. They have been helping us all greatly with signing us in when we're late to
school and need to leave early. They handle our notes, as well as giving us a hand
with whatever we may need regarding school. They also provide First Aid when
needed. These ladies have been a great help with seniors in our study breaks, and
accommodate some of us during lunch and recess in the library. Thanks to Natalie
Rhodes, Cathy Cleary, Sue Nielson, Lois Perceval, Tania Koen and Merissa
Watchorn for your hard work. Thanks again for reading and stay tuned for next
week's captain’s corner.

Open Boy’s Football Team
Congratulations to the Open Boy's Football (soccer) team and Coach Mr Barrett
on their 4-1 win against Bomaderry High School. The team showed great resilience
when Bomaderry scored first by keeping their heads up and playing their own game
to break down Bomaderry's defensive line.
They will now play off
against another South
Coast team to decide
who is South Coast
Champion, but
regardless of that
result, the boys will
now play against a
Western Sydney
team. A fantastic
result so far.
Yass High School Netball
Netball at Yass High School is very popular and there have been close to 40 girls
who have put their names down to play in Goulburn in the NSW Netball Cup on
Wednesday the 19th of June. There will be four teams participating on the day; two
teams in the 7-8 division and two teams in the 9-10 division. Students should have
received a note by now and indicated on returning the note if they are travelling in a
private car or need to travel on the school bus. Please hand those notes in as soon
as possible to ensure all girls have transportation to the carnival. Goulburn is well
known for its cold weather so be prepared to rug up on the day.
U/14 and Open Zone knockout teams: Over 30 girls have been trialling for the two
school knockout teams that will travel to Bowral on the 1st of July this term. The U/14
trials were very competitive and that team has now been picked. All the girl’s trialled
with excellent sportsmanship and for the girls that missed out it was a very difficult
selection to make as only 10 girls could be picked. The Open team still have another
trial which will be held Wednesday 12th June in Netball sport.
If you have any inquiries please contact me via the front office.

Reconciliation Week
Lots has been happening here at school this week to celebrate Reconciliation Week,
which runs from the 27th of May until the 3rd of June. The theme this year is
‘Grounded in Truth, Walk together with Courage’. The official website of
Reconciliation Week states that ‘At the heart of reconciliation is the relationship
between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples. To foster positive race relations, our relationship must be grounded in a
foundation of truth.’
Here at Yass High School we have been celebrating by talking about reconciliation
and doing activities in Roll Call, and competing in our weekly Quiz which this week
focused on Reconciliation. We have been listening to awesome indigenous music
like Baker Boy and Briggs as we move off to class, and we have been watching ‘The
Sapphires’ in the Library at
lunchtime, and keeping warm
with popcorn donated to us by
Trader & Co.
Our new flagpole is up, and
flying the Aboriginal flag
proudly. Thanks to Mrs.Kemp’s
MC class for respectfully putting
up and taking down the flags
each day.
Our Indigenous Mentoring
Group goes once a fortnight to
Yass Public to work with young
indigenous students there, and
they are planning a surprise for
you a little later in the year.
Watch this space!
A reminder that our boys Didj Circle happens every Thursday lunchtime in Room 6.
All boys welcome. No prior knowledge needed.

Big Day In – ANU for IT
Some students took the opportunity to go to the Big Day In at ANU to learn about
career opportunities in IT. There was a variety of sessions presented by industry,
governments and business highlighting the enormous career opportunities for job
seekers in the future. Presenters from Adobe, the Australian Space Agency, (did you
know we are going back to the moon in 2023?!) Wise Tech Global, STEM in the
ADF, Buzzygames and the Dept of Human Services - cyber security, all indicated
there will be more and more opportunities for students in the future.

Choir Sings at Sydney Town Hall
On Monday 20th May we awoke to a chilly pre-dawn and headed to school at 6.30am
to catch the bus to Sydney. After a thorough security check in, like at the airport, we
headed to our seats in the gorgeous Town Hall. We spent the day rehearsing songs
with heaps of other schools, some from as far away as Coffs Harbour. We were led
by the choir director, Liz Scott (who also does School Spectacular), and joined by
the orchestra and the fabulous Casey Donovan. She is an amazing singer and a
really down-to-earth personality.
In our breaks we enjoyed traipsing the city streets, among the throngs of city office
workers, exploring the Queen Victoria Building (who knew there were so many
escalators, tunnels and exits!) and hanging out in Hyde Park. When we got back we
enjoyed listening to a busker who played guitar and sang some great songs which
we joined in singing.
After changing into our smart formal attire, and another group photo (sorry guys!) we
resumed our seats on the stage. There was a big audience, comperes and cameras
- very exciting! Of course, we sounded awesome!! You should check it out on
YouTube: https://vimeo.com/337424502/4e9c4614d8
So after a very long bus ride home due to closure of the M5 we finally arrived back
in Yass at 1.30am. A very long day, but totally worth it!
