WQX as Framework

• The Water Quality Exchange (WQX) is a framework that makes it easier for States, Tribes, and others to submit and share water quality monitoring data over the Internet.

• States, Tribes and other organizations can now submit data directly to the publicly-accessible STORET Data Warehouse using the WQX framework.

• WQX will eventually replace the distributed STORET, the STORET Data Entry Module, Reports Module, and STORET Import Module or SIM as the primary means of submitting water quality monitoring data to EPA.

• The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is the surface water component of The National Map.

• Contains features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, canals, dams and streamgages.

• GIS technologies take advantage of a rich set of attributes imbedded in the NHD to generate specialized information.

• These analyses are possible because the NHD contains a flow network that allows for tracing water downstream or upstream.

• It also uses an addressing system based on reach codes and linear referencing to link specific information about the water such as water discharge rates, water quality, and fish population.

• Using basic NHD features like flow network, linked information, and other characteristics.

13

Hydrography Event Management ToolThe Hydrography Event Management (HEM) Tool provides full functionality for adding and editing events in the NHD.

Events are informational data that are linked to the NHD using a linear referencing system on NHDFlowlines. The use of events is a key characteristic of the NHD by allowing vast amounts of scientific information to be linked to the NHD while keeping the design simple and by making advanced analysis techniques possible.

The HEM tool handles all the linear referencing mechanics to make working with events easy. A Source Feature ID is created that provides the link between the event location and the informational data tied to the location. It also creates metadata linked to the event. The tool also provides network measuring to determine distances through the flowline network.

What it means to users• Users can develop light

weight mapping clients that easily consume OW services.

• The example screenshot shows a light weight client making a call to the OW Navigation Service requesting navigation results 25 miles upstream of a point location.

weight mapping clients that easily consume OW services.

• The example screenshot shows a light weight client making a call to the NHD Point Indexing Service.

• 1) Shows the results of a snap operation.

• 2) Shows the results of a raindrop operation.

weight mapping clients that easily consume OW services.

• The example screenshot shows a light weight client making a call to a prototype basin delineation service that dissolves smoothed catchments into a resulting basin of interest.

What it means to users• Users can display web

service results using customizable style sheets.
