Worldwide, 96 World Heritage forestsprotect more than 73 million hectares of woodland. This accounts for 1.9 percent of the global forest cover andabout 13 percent of the surface area ofall protected forests on the planet. The World Heritage Sustainable Tourism
Programme helps visitors discover WorldHeritage sites while encouraging respect ofthe environment and local cultures andenhancing community livelihoods.
World Heritage sites are inscribed on theList on the basis of their merits as forminga significant contribution to the culturaland natural heritage of the world. Theiroutstanding universal value is considered togo beyond national boundaries and to be ofimportance for future generations.
Conserving the diversity of life on Earth iscritical to global human welfare. With thesupport of the World Heritage Convention,the most important biodiversity sitesreceive international recognition as well astechnical and financial assistance to dealwith threats such as agricultural encroach-ment, alien species and poaching.
The Earthen Architecture ConservationProgramme works toward conserving andrevitalizing earthen architecture, which isthreatened by natural disasters and indus-trialization. Currently, some one hundredproperties on the World Heritage List arepartially or totally built with earth.
The World Heritage Marine Programmehelps countries nominate marine sites andmanage them effectively to ensure that theywill thrive for future generations. There arecurrently 32 marine sites on the WorldHeritage List.
Cultural heritage refers to monuments,buildings and sites with historical, aesthetic,archaeological, scientific, ethnological oranthropological value. Natural heritagerefers to outstanding physical, biological orgeological features and includes habitats ofthreatened species, as well as areas with scientific, environmental or aesthetic value. Mixed sites have both cultural and natural values.
The World Heritage emblem symbolizesthe interdependence of the world’s naturaland cultural diversity. The central squarerepresents the achievements of human skilland inspiration, and the circle celebratesthe gifts of nature. The emblem is round,like the world, a symbol of global protec-tion for the heritage of all humankind.

to the Imperial Palace in Beijing — all of these places,as varied as they are, have one thing in common. All areWorld Heritage sites of outstanding cultural or naturalvalue to humanity and are worthy of protection forfuture generations to know and enjoy.
The World Heritage Cities Programmeseeks to protect living historic city centresand their cultural and architectural her-itage from threats such as uncontrolleddevelopment or inappropriate construction.
The Small Islands Programme focuses onpreserving heritage on the islands of theCaribbean Sea and the Atlantic, Pacificand Indian oceans.

For 2,000 years the Ifugao have planted terraced rice fields in the PhilippineCordilleras of Luzon Island, but today ancient ties between land and people aresevering as the young abandon mountain villages, threatening the future existenceof the emerald terraces.
The intricate lace-like brickwork of Afghanistan’s soaring 65 m Minaret of Jam, erected inthe late twelfth century, is a hallmark of the region’s Islamic architecture. The tower andsurrounding remains, threatened by war and looting, were added to the List of WorldHeritage in Danger in 2002.
The immense stone moai that guard the coast of Chile’s Rapa Nui National Park (Easter Island) keepthe secrets of a Polynesian society that settled on these volcanic islands around A.D. 300 and erectedhundreds of monoliths from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries.
On a cliff above the St Lawrence River, theHistoric District of Québec, Canada, foundedin 1608 as an outpost for exploration anddefence, became the religious and adminis-trative heart of New France and remained avital center of the fur trade under Britishrule. The only walled city north of Mexico,Old Québec preserves 4.5 km of rampartsand architecture spanning four centuries.
Christian pilgrims gather around the cruciform roof of St George’s,one of eleven churches hewn into the red rock of Ethiopia’s volcanic plateau in the twelfth century under devout King Lalibela.Preserved as a World Heritage site since 1978, Lalibela’s churches are now threatened by erosion.
Glowing in reflected morning light, the unique interlocking shells of theSydney Opera House protect two concert halls and symbolize the modernsensibility of twentieth-century Australia. Completed in 1973, it became aWorld Heritage site in 2007 for its architectural and structural innovations.
The Geirangerfjord, one of the West Norwegian Fjords, is among the world’s longest, deepestand most pristine, flowing between sheer 1,400 m rock walls punctuated by waterfalls andevergreen forests.
The coral stone and mangrove wood architecture of Lamu OldTown blends influences from Africa, Asia and Europe, a legacyof more than 700 years of continuous settlement in the thrivingKenyan port, a centre of Swahili culture and Islamic studies.

In the warm sapphire waters surrounding the 250 km Belize BarrierReef—largest in the Western Hemisphere—shimmering mahoganysnappers are among 500 species of fish, as well as threatened seaturtles, crocodiles, and manatees, which find refuge in a lush gardenof coral, mangrove forests and estuaries.

In the rugged terrain of Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park atthe tip of South America lies the sculpted blue and white icescapeof the Moreno Glacier, one of dozens of glaciers in the park, whichencompasses the 14,000 km2 Patagonian Ice Field, the largestoutside Antarctica.

he United Nations Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganization (UNESCO) works with countries around the worldto identify and protect cultural and natural places that meritrecognition as part of the common heritage of humankind.
UNESCO adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of theWorld Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972. Since then, 184 countrieshave ratified the treaty, and at present 851 properties are inscribed onthe List — 660 of which are cultural, 166 natural and 25 mixed (acombination of the two). They are noted here in alphabetical order bycountry and in the order they were listed.
