DESCRIPTION

Tourism development without responsibility and accountability has resulted in adverse impacts on women. If at all women are considered in the debate about tourism, it is generally as victims, either in terms of sex work or in advertising that portrays them as sex objects. This publication throws light on why the issue of sex tourism has been the most widely debated, and then reflects on a few studies which look at the economic, social and cultural impact of tourism on women. These studies and classics of tourism commentary provide an alternate perspective to the one that portrays women solely as sex objects. It intends to be a starting point for future research, analysis, strategy and action to be taken by policymakers, community members , activists, and academics. The hope is to learn more about what really happens to women in tourist areas.
